In 2020, the Manuscript Cookbooks digital collection was built using Islandora, an open-source digital repository. It is currently hosted on DiscoveryGarden’s software as a service platform. The manuscripts are displayed using the Internet Archive Bookreader. All images were scanned by Innovative Digital Imaging.
Funding: The New York Academy of Medicine's Manuscript Cookbooks project was supported by funds from the Pine Tree Foundation. Four of the manuscripts were scanned as part of Adam Matthew Digital’s Food and Drink in History.
Software Used:
- Adobe Photoshop 2021
- Islandora
- Internet Archive Bookreader
Scanning: Most manuscripts in the collection were scanned in their entirety, including the covers. A few of the manuscripts have many blank pages, and some blank pages were omitted in the scanning process. The digitization was based on FADGI guidelines for 3-star level. Images are 24-bit color, 400 dpi uncompressed TIFFs. Images were scanned for digital display as a book object and were edited in Photoshop to ensure the pages aligned when placed together in the Internet Archive Bookreader.
Metadata: Metadata is provided for each item in the collection at the item level based on the catalog record for each manuscript. MODS is the metadata schema used for this collection. Library of Congress subject headings were used in the Subjects field. Genre terms were taken from the controlled vocabulary provided by the Rare Books and Manuscripts Section of the Association of College and Research Libraries, a division of the American Library Association.
Rights and Permissions: Images on the digital collections website are public domain (pre-1923) and are freely available to the general public for educational, research, and personal use unless otherwise noted.
